Mrs. Dee Thompson, Assistant Principal
I am honored to serve as the Assistant Principal at Horn Lake Elementary! This role takes me back to my primary educational roots. My original plan was to solely be a kindergarten teacher. Over a period of 13 years, I taught kindergarten through fourth grade students and was as a literacy coach.
For the past 11 years, I have served as a Literacy Specialist for DeSoto County Schools. In this position, I provided support and professional learning opportunities for both teachers and administrators in strategies to grow readers and writers. This position also provided me to opportunity to conduct numerous workshops in student achievement at the local, state, and national level. In addition, I was appointed to assist the State of Mississippi with MAAP test development team. My experience is very broad, so I look forward to assisting students and teachers at Horn Lake Elementary in accomplishing high achievement levels.
My professional education started with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with minors in Early Childhood and English as A Second Language at Florida International University. After teaching several years, I wanted to learn more about the development of literacy skills so I earned a Master’s Degree in Reading. I earned a second Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University.
I believe that involvement in my community is an essential part of educational leadership. I have served on the Excel by 5 Collation in Hernando for the past five years. I am currently the Secretary for the DeSoto Literacy Council and I serve on the Board of Directors for the Mississippi Learning Forward organization.
On a personal note, our family moved to DeSoto County 12 years ago from Florida and we love living in the warm friendly community here in DeSoto County. My husband, Stu and I live in Southaven and have a son and daughter. Our family also includes three fun-loving dachshunds. John graduated from Florida State University, he is currently working for Nikon Corporation and lives in Durham, North Carolina. Emily graduated from Delta State University in May 2019 and is currently working at Camp Lake Stevens. In our free time, we love to spend time in the great outdoors!
It is my hope, that at Horn Lake Elementary, we inspire our students to find joy in learning!
