Welcome to The Library

Mrs. Joni Baker

I want to take the time to introduce myself.  My name is Joni Baker, and I want to tell you how excited I am to be your child’s librarian this year!  I graduated from the University of Central Arkansas in 1980, with a BSE in English and Business. I began my teaching career at Southaven High School, where I taught English grades 9-12. It wasn't until later in my career I discovered my love of the library. Since then, I have been the librarian at Southaven High School and now at Horn Lake Elementary.  I enjoy my job and I love the opportunity to get to know each of my 550 students.  The most rewarding part of being the librarian is watching students grow as readers from year-to-year. I enjoy watching them read for enjoyment and for the desire to learn new information.

Our library is based on the fact that every student has individual needs that must be met in order to create the most meaningful opportunities possible for them to learn and grow through reading.  I want to work with them to make sure that your child receives the best possible learning experience.

My goal is to help build lifelong readers and learners by helping students develop their reading skills with awesome reading materials, opportunities to practice reading, and to conduct meaningful research.

While reading is a very important skill to master, we must be responsible for guiding them through the other learning experiences that can’t be achieved through a book.

 · Treat others the way you would like to be treated - with respect and kindness.

· Follow through to complete all jobs.

· Work to become independent by carefully following written and oral directions.

· I want them to become self-confident and organized by giving their best efforts in all that they do.

· I want each student to learn and care for their classmates in order to create a welcoming community of learners.
